Duo Accused Of Stealing Thousands In Items From Greenwich Avenue Business Caught After Chase

Two men were arrested in connection with a shoplifting incident at a Greenwich Avenue business.

Antoine Whitney, 28, and Shakur Smikle, 18, both of Brooklyn, were arrested on Sunday, Nov. 17, by Greenwich Police after an officer saw the two in a vehicle with others who walked into the business and exited running carrying baskets of items, Greenwich Police said.

According to police, Whitney, who the driver of the vehicle, attempted to leave the scene after being told to stop by officers. He was then stopped by a marked patrol vehicle and backed up unsafely through a stop sign, police said.

Inside his vehicle, police found suspected marijuana and very strong magnets used by shoplifters to bypass security devices, police said.

Smikle, one of three who fled on foot, was arrested a short distance away. 

The amount of merchandise stolen was $4,808.08, the police said.

Whitney was charged with interfering with an officer, possession of shoplifting device, larceny, conspiracy to commit larceny, organized retail theft, failure to obey stop sign and unsafe backing. He is being held on a $10,000 bond.

Smikle was charged with interfering with an officer, larceny, conspiracy to commit larceny, and organized retail theft. He is being held on a $10,000 bond. 

Both are scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 2.
